With Americans' endless fascination with Hollywood celebrities, it's no wonder shoppers now have the chance to dress like their favorite TV stars.
Several Web sites cater to helping viewers feel like they can have it all, too, by wearing the same garments they've seen their favorite characters wear on TV.
And what retailer wouldn't want to get in on the style buzz certain shows create, selling outfits right off TV stars' backs? It's like the ultimate concept in product placement.
I admit I'm addicted to Desperate Housewives, Brothers & Sisters and Grey's Anatomy. But would I dare to try to dress like any of the Desperate hotties? Certainly not Edie (Nicollette Sheridan), but why not Bree?
I'm not kidding. The prim and proper Bree wears black gingham dish gloves on the show (she'll wear pink ones in a May episode). You can buy the same pair at the ABC TV store for $13.95, through www.SeenOn.com , which runs stores for several TV Web sites.
Want some real Bree fashion? I liked her Lilly Pulitzer halter dress from the Feb. 18 episode. I more than balked at the price, though -- $298 at Saks Fifth Avenue, linked through www.SeenOn.com .
I thought Edie's styles would be too wild for me, so I was surprised to find a surprisingly innocent stretch wool gabardine skirt she has worn by Ralph Lauren. You can get a tweed version of the skirt through the Ralph Lauren site, on sale for $69.99.
So how about those sex-obsessed doctors from Grey's Anatomy? My favorite is Izzie (Katherine Heigl), so I looked up her infamous prom dress from the Sept. 28 heartbreaking episode when she lost Denny.
It turns out that Izzie's dark pink dress from that show is an Alexandria satin bridal gown by Amsale. The SeenOn site takes you to Amsale, where the beautifully ruched, strapless dress is pictured. But you have to go through a store locator to find a local vendor to give you a price.
Are you dying to dress like one of this season's American Idol contestants? Try searching www.starstyle.com , which leads you to various retail Web sites.
Many of the outfits found on this site are described as ``star stylist's similar pick,'' but some appear to be what the contestants are actually wearing.
Do you wish Sanjaya Malakar would just go away, or would you secretly like to dress like him? A ``similar'' look featured in his online closet this week is a Rock and Republic French cuff shirt in Italian cotton, which sells for $215 at Nordstrom.
Or go funkier with ousted rocker Gina Glocksen's Gothica Boots, which are suede stiletto boots featuring a cross of small metal studs. They're $112.46 at www.zappos.com .
Overall, I found www.SeenOn.com to be a more user-friendly site than www.starstyle.com . In my final search, I checked on starstyle for one of my newer favorite shows, Brothers & Sisters.
The funny thing about this site is the merchandise featured for each character doesn't often match the site's description of the character's style. For example, the site describes matriarch Nora Walker (Sally Field) as a graceful, warm housewife who wears classic clothes. But Nora's featured clothing shows sexy, clingy tops.
On the flirtier side is Kitty Walker's clothing, worn by actress Calista Flockhart. She's described as having feminine elegance, in the form of flirty skirts and slip dresses.
